5 Tricks To Steer Clear Of Puffy Eyes & Dark Circles!

With the holiday season in full force, you are probably way too familiar with waking up in the morning to dark and puffy eyes after a poor nights rest. However, read on to find out why you can't blame lack of sleep anymore...

Even though most people believe the cause of "tired-looking-eyes" is from being tired, that actually is not the case! Dark circles are usually genetic and are caused by the thinning of the skin under your eyes, which ultimately makes the enlarged blood vessels under your skin show through more easily. The reason dark circles show up even stronger after a bad nights sleep is because lack of sleep increases cortisol, which then engorges your blood vessels, making them appear darker in color. But that's not all; darkness can also be a result of nasal allergies, stress, and irritants in your makeup or skin care products.

Puffiness, on the other hand, is caused by the retention of lymphatic fluid and is most of the time due to allergies, consumption of unhealthy foods and beverages (i.e salt, alcohol etc.), hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues or just the simple act of aging. To reduce puffiness, an extra pillow for more upper body elevation while sleeping is an effective tool. 

The following are our five favorite tricks for beautiful bright eyes each and every morning, no matter how much or how little sleep you get!

Trick #1: Green Tea!

Green tea is an incredible antioxidant that does wonders for dark and puffy eyes. Green tea contains tannins that have astringent properties, meaning they will constrict the dilated blood vessel capillaries, ultimately reducing the darkness under your eyes.

How To Use: Soak two organic green tea bags in hot water for 3-5 minutes, squeeze out excess water and place in fridge for about 10-15 minutes to cool down, apply to eyes for 15-20 minutes daily. 

Trick #2: Lavender Skin Nutrients!

Our Skin Nutrients contain Vitamins A, E, and C which greatly aids in cellular regeneration. The fatty acids nourish the skin under your eyes, while the antioxidant properties rejuvenate and tighten, leaving your skin looking radiant and brightened.

How To Use: To DIY a serum, mix together 1 pump of Lavender Skin Nutrients with an equal amount of organic aloe vera gel, and 1 drop of lemon essential oil. Before bed, massage the mixture gently around your eyes. 

Trick #3: Witch Hazel!

Witch Hazel works like magic under your eyes since it is also a natural astringent. Because of this, it greatly reduces inflammation and discoloration. The chrysin shrinks the engorged blood vessels which increases circulation, the tannins decrease the pigmentation, and the other properties further work to lighten any pigmentations on the skin!

How To Use: Soak two cotton pads in witch hazel (chilled or at room temperature), squeeze out excess fluid, place over eyes for 5 or so minutes daily. *Witch Hazel does have a specific scent, so it you are not a fan of it, feel free to use another method in it's place.

Trick #4: White Potatoes!

Potatoes have astringent properties that helps remove fluid from under the eyes, and the best part is, most of us probably have some lying around our kitchen!

How To Use: Chill one potato in fridge, cut two thin slices, place over entire eye (make sure it covers all of your dark circles), leave on for 20 minutes, remove the potato slices from your eyes, rinse eyes with cool water and pat dry. Repeat a few times per week. 

Trick #5: Cucumbers!

Cucumbers may be the most well-known trick to help with dark and puffy eyes, but that doesn't make it any less effective! Cucumbers contain many antioxidants (vitexin, orientin, cucurbitacins...) which is incredible for anti-aging! Additionally, it provides a cooling relief, has a slight lightening effect, reduces fine lines due to Potassium and Vitamin E contents, firms, and revitalizes the skin around your eyes!

How To Use: Cut two slices of chilled cucumber slices and place over eyes as needed. Alternatively, you can soak two cotton pads in chilled cucumber juice, squeeze the excess fluid out, and place on top of your eyes - you can do this every morning.
